At arm’s length-
that’s where you reside-
far enough to avoid the sting-
enough distance to dodge the blow-
at arm’s length is where you must
what would you do if you were reeled
far better to watch the ship sink
from the safety of the shore-
the many cries and screams from above
and below deck should be warning
why board it just to ride it to the bottom
of the sea?
far safer to watch the burning building from
the other side of the street-
at arms length-
it’s safer there-
you’re able to dodge the burn-
deftly parry the strike-
enough time to react-
time enough to escape-
at arms length-
that’s where you must be*

At arms length – that’s where we hold the courage to take a risk and live life to the fullest. Fear keeps the life we deserve to live at a safe distance. great poem. thanks also for making me learn 2 new words (i had to look up “deftly” and “parry.”). 🙂

I read this poem and thought of a certain historic event – the sinking of the Titanic. Overall I saw the message was about taking chances – not knowing what the outcome will be. Some people are burned in love – and vow never to let themselves be that vulnerable again. They go through life – trying so hard not to care – not to reveal their feelings for someone.

There are no guarantees in life that the one you develop intense feelngs for will reciprocate. Take chances and enjoy life!!
