I lifted the leaf from the ground one cold October day,
a gift for you-
just an ordinary leaf
made beautiful by the deep blush of autumn that it wore proudly on its delicate skin-
just a quick splash of red on a canvas so hungry for color,
a single five pointed bouquet veined with the spirit of another life-
I was reminded on that day that
beauty lives in the steady breaths of the sky,
its mists ever painted in swirling silver…
we’ve got to see it in order to feel it,
we have to feel it in order to live it-
I found it that day on the arms of a brittle crimson star,
an uncommon reminder of the things that we often forget…
just an ordinary gift to you on an ordinary October day,
a reminder to keep your eyes open, your senses fresh,
and your heart ever ready*

The sun baked my skin like ancient clay,
and I inhaled each scant breeze as if it were my last breath…
and there you stood, eyes radiating warmer than the August afternoon,
a lone flower amid the swirling dust-
I forgot in that instant about the sun,
about the heat,
and my lungs and eyes quickened at the spark of you-
I inhaled you like a lilac in spring,
and drank in the picture of your soul as if it were the last drink I’d ever take-
alive, I was,
awakened by radiance,
stunned by the simple ferocity of your countenance,
elegant and calm as a midnight star-
awake, I was then*

I followed the spirals of the galaxy through the mirror of
your eyes-
a flight amongst the stars,
past the cold mountains of yesterday
pockmarked with the gashes and scars of their
trials,
floating in solidity and alone in a mass of
collective silence-
I drifted to the origin,
the rupture that began with a tremble,
the tremble that rumbled to a tremor,
the tremor that roared across the black
like a brush coated with a pigment as
red as the blush on your lips-
I flew to a fracture of the first second
and was blinded by the absence of time,
the absence of sound,
and the smallness of the moment encapsulated
within a grain of mystery-
I soared the spirals of the galaxy
within the comfort of your eyes,
a flight amongst the stars
and among the stone sentinels,
through to the origin and weaved
within the first breath-
I wondered what was beyond the wall*

Impressions left on the green knoll
in June,
your youth sprinkled upon the grass
like dismantled wildflowers,
a smattering of muted color set upon the
heather like a canvas in wait-
your kiss sang on the wind like so many
birds heaving their pride into the weave
of the afternoon…
you blinked,
and the door opened to a foreverworld
cast in the stone of the ancients,
a delicate permanence spread wide like a glittering empire
before my eyes, but only for an instant-
verdant dreams sway on the minutes of June
like grass scattering on the breeze,
impressions left on the knoll like the shadow of your
youth,
muted color set upon the warmth like a canvas awaiting
its soul*

I’d seen love on the screen, written in pixels and
colors and scattered dialogue-
love plastered onto billboards and left to peel and
fade under the harsh sunlight,
their meaning flaking away like dry, molted skin-
love was seen in magazines, mannequin smiles
pasted in a glossy frame and frozen into paper
realism for all time,
just one dimension of the whole sphere-
love finds its way into all places,
creeping into play like water penetrates dry soil,
there to ferment or to grow,
to nourish,
or to evaporate-
your eyes, like starfire, peered beneath my skin
like a telescope peers into the soul of a distant
world,
and reminded me of the wholeness of
things-
what will I take with me from this place?*
